LBPD Event: Maryland State Archives Visits with LBPD Online
Learn about the Maryland State Archives, what you can expect when using our resources or visiting, and why preserving our state’s history is important for the future. Discover the wealth of resources available, and how our staff are improving ADA accessibility.
Founded in 1935, the Maryland State Archives is the central repository for Maryland’s government records of permanent value. Records date from the founding of the Maryland colony in 1634 and sometimes as recent as the 21st century. Records include many executive, legislative, and judicial records, county court, land, and probate records, reports and publications of State, county and municipal governments, special collections of maps, newspapers, photographs, and religious records.
Rachel Frazier has a BA and MLIS from the University of Maryland, and has worked for the Maryland State Archives since 2008. After starting in the grant-funded Study of the Legacy of Slavery in Maryland, she now serves as the Director of Reference Services. Reference serves visitors with many needs - historical, genealogical, and legal. Rachel is the recipient of the 2024 Ancestry Leadership Award for team building and for redesigning the Archives’ Search Room for improved ADA accessibility. She is a 2025 fellow with the History Leadership Institute. Making archives accessible and welcoming is an ongoing goal of Rachel and her colleagues.
