Youth Showcase: Are We Having a Literacy Crisis? (virtual) Online
September 24, 1:00-2:30pm (virtual)
Description:
Are kids reading less today? Are they reading differently? How do we define “reading” in 2025? What are the current trends in reading and literacy, and what is the role of libraries today in light of these current trends? During this Showcase, a panel of youth services coordinators, frontline public library staff, and a school librarian will delve into this question of whether we are in a reading crisis. While the definite answer may not be reached, and different opinions will be expressed, this Showcase primary intent is to raise awareness of current observations of the reading habits of today’s youth and create a venue for professional discussion on this topic amongst library practitioners working with youth. Different perspectives about reading, literacy, and the role of public libraries will be shared. Both public and school libraries are invited to attend this Showcase who wish to explore these questions surrounding reading and literacy and ponder what strategies and programs will resonate with youth today to support reading proficiency and enjoyment of reading for all ages and abilities of readers.
